Managed IT Services: 7 Blogs MSPmentor Didn’t Write, Sept 30

Amy Katz and I spent much of the week in Fort Collins, Colo., meeting with Penton Media‘s technology editors and staff, and discussing some long-term strategies. Penton, as you may recall, acquired Nine Lives Media and its brands (MSPmentor, The VAR Guy and Talkin’ Cloud) in August 2011. Now, I’m heading to Oracle OpenWorld (Oct. 2-6 San Francisco). But before I arrive, here are seven managed IT services blogs the MSPmentor team didn’t have a chance to write for the week ending Sept. 30, 2011.

7. Getting Educated: Level Platforms has launched a certification program for MSPs that run the company’s Managed Workplace software. True believers include Dave Sobel, CEO of Evolve Technologies (an MSP that embrace Level Platforms’ software earlier this year) and Matthew Adkins, president of VanGuard Technologies, one of the first Level Tech certified MSPs. Level Platforms isn’t alone in the MSP certification effort. Kaseya has been promoting a Certified Engineer designation to its partners and customers.

6. New Hire: It sounds like NetEnrich  has hired a VP of sales to help the company accelerate its closet-to-cloud IT as a service strategy… and perhaps a few other surprises.

5. Nearly Here: Microsoft’s next Windows Intune release is set to debut in around two weeks. I’m still not hearing much from MSPs about the updated PC management cloud service. But I’ll keep my ears open.

4. Oracle and MSPs?: I just arrived at Oracle OpenWorld. There, Oracle Channel Chief Judson Althoff described how Oracle plans to work with 5,000 more channel partners — including managed services providers. Clues here.

3. Busy Week: In addition to Oracle OpenWorld, this week’s event lineup includes Interop in New York and a SonicWall Partner Conference. Our sources are navigating each event…

2. Have You Met My Dog?: Sept. 30 marked one year since one of my best friends gave my entire family a dog. It was one of the greatest gifts my kids ever received. The friend has since moved away; I don’t know when I’ll see him again. But he knows I miss him. That’s all I have to say about that.

1. Dollars and Cents: Just an educated guess involving a well-placed source: Watch for a potential private equity deal involving a managed services software company the week of Oct. 3. I’m banking on my tipster being accurate.

That’s all for now. I’ll be catching up on some more blogs over the next few days. And I look forward to reading your comments — and responding to them — throughout the week. Thanks, as usual, for your insights.

Mike: Big-time thanks. I’m doing great. Camped out at SFO, heading to home to JFK after some rather interesting meetings at Oracle OpenWorld. More thoughts soon. Thanks again for the note. Made my day.
