In the world of journalism there’s an old saying: Three is a trend. Such is the case this week as vendors like BMC, N-able Technologies and Paessler AG promote monitoring and management tools that increasingly focus on virtualization. Here’s the update.
Among the latest moves:
- Jason Andrew, VP of worldwide channels at BMC, says the company will maintain a vendor-neutral approach to virtualization management, assisting channel partners with environments like VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and more.
- JP Jauvin, president and COO 0f N-able Technologies, says the company’s next release — N-central 8.1 — will include virtualization management capabilities. Version 8.1 is hitting beta now with general release expected around July 2011.
- Paessler PRTG version 8.4 arrived in early May. According to North America GM Ken Sanofsky, the goal is to manage a wide range of virtual environments: Microsoft Hyper-V, VMWare, Parallels Virtuozzo Containers and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) to name a few. “Our focus is two-fold,” Sanofsky said. “If it’s [a virtual environment] is attached to a network, we monitor it. The second is that PRTG monitoring is part of our all-in licensing solution.”
No doubt, some monitoring companies have long focused on virtualized environments. Nimsoft, for instance, was one of the first companies to help MSPs manage VBlock and VCE (VMware, Cisco, EMC) environments.
I concede: MSPmentor has to check in with additional monitoring software providers; I suspect quite a few have virtualization management strategies in place. We just happened to hear directly from BMC, N-able and Paessler within hours of each other.
