Microsoft has acquired AVICode, Inc., a specialist in .NET application and service monitoring. Is there a managed services hook here? You bet. AVIcode will be rolled into the Microsoft System Center, giving MSPs a unified view into physical, virtualized, and cloud applications. Here’s some more perspective on the deal.

The basic idea, according to Microsoft’s blog entry, is to help their customers ensure that mission-critical applications and services remain available, whether they’re deployed locally or from a data center miles away. While System Center Operations Manager had some of that functionality already, it had an admitted weakness when it came to the cloud — a weakness now addressed with AVICode.

AVICode’s technological distinctiveness has already been assimilated into System Center, with users gaining (per that blog entry):

• Simplified management with automatic discovery of application dependencies and requirements.
• Optimized business productivity with always-on, real-time monitoring, and rapid error resolution of business-critical applications.
• Lower cost of managing datacenter services through enterprise-wide standards to manage custom and disparate applications.

It’s a wonder it’s taken so long for Microsoft to get on the ball, with competitors like and CA’s Nimsoft business and Level Platforms providing cloud application monitoring for quite some time.
