Earlier this year, Google Apps added support for smartphone security policies. Now they’ve taken the next step and giving Google Apps administrators even more control over mobile devices with deeper policy settings. Here’s the scoop.
The Google Enterprise Blog post makes it sound pretty simple. Just click the “Mobile” tab in “Service Settings” on the Google Apps control panel and you’ll get access to options like:
- Requiring devices to use data encryption
- Auto-wiping device after specified number of failed password attempts
- Disabling the phone’s camera
- Ensuring old passwords are not reused
- Requiring passwords to be changed after specified time interval
- Disabling data synchronization when device is roaming to reduce wireless overage charges
That same blog entry indicates that Google Apps will support policy administration on Google’s own Android smartphone platform later this year. Which raises an important question – it didn’t already?
