Microsoft is really quick to grasp of the need of the hosted model of unified communications. SAAS model still being not trusted enough hosted model provides the best alternative. Unified communication services will definitely gain pace when all the big players like Microsoft and CIISCO begin promoting them. But ultimately the end users are the major determinants.

Matt: Thanks for raising some additional perspectives. I'm familiar with the Intermedia-Unison effort. Our previous coverage mentioned Unison; sorry I didn't make that company clear in the blog post above. I'll continue to watch the Intermedia partner base closely as they evaluate UC strategies.

I have to agree to partners will need to take a look at OCS. We are a microsoft Gold partner that has been researching OCS hosted. I think this could be an interesting solution for smb.

But BPOS as a phone/complete UC system? ahem, not gonna happen...

#1-bpos offers NO telephones calls (no ent. voice)
#2-bpos can't even do peer-to-peer voice outside the firewall (i'm serious: if 2 users are not inside the same firewall they can not do any voice/video/ (media) only IM!)
#3-BPOS OCS can't do any multiparty audio/video conference using ocs

Also please make it clear that Intermedia is not offering OCS Enterprise Voice as a UC solution--they are offering an unknown product called Unison, that has a lot of concerns in my mind other than just dialtone concerns. Concerns that other partners has echo'd. One major one is that Unison/intermedia is asking parnters to ditch MS Outlook & exchange--which sounds almost ridiculous to me.

Here is my research on Unison:

There are parnters offering full OCS Enterprise Voice:
