MSPs Not Falling for Apple — Yet

As Apple marches forward in the consumer market, we decided to check in with MSPs to see if they’re increasingly specializing in Apple products and/or Apple-related services. So far, major MSP and VAR peer groups — like HTG Peer Groups — say they aren’t seeing an uptick in demand for Apple-oriented solutions. But if you look hard enough there is a small Apple MSP niche. Here’s some perspective.

In the PC market, some reports show that Apple now has 12 percent market share, up a rather impressive 3 percent since last year. But so far, Apple’s growing momentum doesn’t appear to be greatly influencing most MSPs.

HTG founder Arlin Sorensen says the peer group organization isn’t seeing overwhelming demand for Mac-oriented managed services. But he noted Kaseya has introduced Mac support.

Still, there seems to be a small niche of Apple-centric MSP offerings. Apple itself offers a remote management system for Macs. And Maccius, a solutions provider in San Jose, Calif., positions itself as an MSP serving the Apple platform. We’ll be checking in with them for more perspective in the days ahead.

Arlin is right. We have a number of Mac’s under management, and simply integrate that into our standard managed services offering. The services aren’t “Mac” oriented, but we view it as simply part of the offering.

I’m notorious for being a hardcore Mac guy myself, presenting on my bright red MacBook Pro, and several of my engineers also use Macs for their field machines.

I view it as part of the infrastructure offering as opposed to a separate practice.

Hey Dave: Thanks for shedding more light on the situation… Happy to read your post… From my MacBook Pro desktop.

Our company (forgetcomputers.com) is focused 100% on providing MSP services to Apple users. Apple’s Remote Management System is a great tool, but it’s not MSP friendly. We use the JAMF Software Casper Suite for more robust management. If any MSPs need assistance with Apple products we’re available to partner.

Ben: Fantastic to hear from you. Please get in touch with the original blog author, contributing associate blogger Dave Courbanou (david [at] NineLivesMediaInc.com). I’m sure he’d love to hear more.

The 12% market share stat for Apple (link provided in blog) is for households only, not businesses. Do we know what their penetration is in the business world? Because that’s where the vast majority of MSPs are focused.

    Hey Ben A,

I’m currently trying to get in contact with Ben Greiner and dig into that story. Hopefully we’ll have something in the near future.
