Joe, good article. You are right about Cisco emphasizing WAAS. In fact we had major news for WAAS on the same day as the ISR announcement on Nov. 18 in the linked PR below where 7 Service Providers announced their managed WAN Optimization based on Cisco WAAS. WAN Optimization is a fast growing managed service opportunity and Cisco WAAS is being deployed by most of the major MSPs.

Speaking of AXP, if you're keen to develop applications on the branch router, either through your own System Integration teams, or one of Cisco's ISVs, check out the Cisco "Think Inside the Box" developer contest, with total prize money of US $100,000!

Visit http://www.cisco.com/go/thinkinside, for more information. Hurry! Contest is targeted to end January 2009. Individuals or team sizes of upto three can participate.

Cisco does have the Monitor Director product which can remotely monitor customer sites. See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps7246/index.html for details. There were plans to grow this product significantly, but my understanding is that those plans have been shelved for now and that the current CMD product is being EOL'd in favor of some new as-yet-to-be-disclosed strategy.

Wally: To the best of my knowledge Cisco has no plans to compete with N-able, Level Platforms, Kaseya and other companies serving the MSP remote management and monitoring market. But you should check in with Cisco directly on that.

Does cisco plan to launch a remote management tool similar to Nable or level platforms? If so when?
