Given the current economic conditions, I would expect cost to be a heightened concern for SMBs. This could pose challenges to MSPs who use value-based propositions in marketing their services. So while the underlying service may not change, the message will have to be tailored to address the economic concerns. This may require more in-depth cost benefit analysis and helping clients uncover hidden costs of a break-fix approach.

I agree. I would strongly dismiss it as well, but as you know, stranger things have happened. I wouldn't suspect current MSP customers would want to move back to break/fix but will selling managed services in a tightening economy change at all? Will the message and services change?

Shane: You raise an interesting question - Will customers want to eliminate their "fixed" monthly costs, and take their chances on emergency break-fix services?

I suspect most MSPmentor readers will strongly dismiss such a scenario. But I think we all need to abandon conventional wisdom from time to time, so that we can explore unanticipated scenarios.

I can tell you this: The OnForce market place for VARs continues to grow rapidly because many VARs are outsourcing emergency on-site work to one another, especially in the Gulf Coast region following the recent hurricanes.

Money Matters:
Joe. You touched on a very interesting point. While there certainly is the affect of the small business 'tightening' their belt and not needed expensive IT staff, I wonder too if this could also signal a swing toward break/fix. Because it sounds much more "economical" to a Small Business in light of all the benefits of Proactive services. Will we see a rise in the hybrid model? Or will the message of pure MSP's change to acommodate this slowing economy?
