Mike: I see the battle shaping up to be Microsoft VS Microsoft.

Here's what I mean: In 1995, Microsoft insiders debated whether to make the MSN network proprietary or open (based on HTML and Internet standards). The proprietary voices within Microsoft won the argument but lost the online services war because they tried to compete with classic AOL and CompuServe, rather than pushing ahead to Broadband and open standards.

This time around, Microsoft's online team must avoid the temptation to lock into proprietary ways (IE, Classic Office) and must instead find a way to ensure Microsoft's online applications are standards-driven while still somehow tying into some revenue-type of back-end model for Microsoft and its partners.

This will be an interesting race! We have been testing Google Docs, and I must say that it is pretty damn cool. The collaboration benefits are really amazing. The fact that Google Docs is getting so much momentum on campuses should really scare Microsoft...that's where Google got their momentum for their search engine as well. And we know how that turned out...
