Peter,

once again I could not agree more with the insights you have shared in you blog post. There are many firms out there that have successful businesses and feel the same things Craig has expressed below.

The market is changing quickly and new technologies are becoming available in both hosted pay as you go models and for purchase. When you look at the current competitive landscape it is blurry.

Mike Cooch posted some great thoughts on Utility Computing that are worth a read for anyone thinking about what your business is going to look like 18 – 24 months from now:

Not only is it now easier to ‘Make money with managed services’ everyone from Dell and Microsoft to the IT firm down the street is trying to figure out the right formula to do it.

I had my doubts about the MSP market until I started seeing platforms offered in a saas model. To your point, our company doesn't have the cash to build a noc or buy a platform. But we are now looking at several hosted options that will allow us to "pay as we go." We expect to be able to charge our customers a slight premium for these services. I don't expect the hosted model to fully replace our on-site services, though.
