Big Partner Embraces Cisco Managed Services

Well, that didn’t take long. Only days after Cisco announced its managed services strategy, a major solutions provider says it has achieved the premium Cisco Powered Managed Service designations in Managed Unified Communications and Managed Security. The company, Getronics, has about 24,000 employees across 25 countries.

Jean-Paul Adans, an executive VP at Getronics, says the managed unified communications effort includes unified messaging, instant messaging, corporate voice and conference services. Managed security, in contrast, includes firewall, intrusion detection and intrusion prevention services. Both managed services are now integrated into Getronics’ Global Services Delivery Model, according to Adans.

Getronics reinforces a growing theme in the managed services space: The MSP industry isn’t reserved for small VARs targeting small and mid-size businesses (SMBs). Increasingly, managed services efforts are increasingly global efforts serving large enterprises.

Cisco announced its managed services channel strategy less than two weeks ago. I first heard rumblings about the strategy during a Cisco event in September. The networking giant has vowed not to compete with traditional MSP platform providers like Autotask, ConnectWise, Kaseya, Level Platforms and N-able.

Managed services initiatives are not as easily delivered at they might seem at first glance. And I’ve yet to see anyone doing a really good job of it both from an execution and a revenue standpoint. We’ll see if Cisco has what it takes to change that.
